John Bricout, associate professor and associate director for research, is the coauthor of a new article, "Leveraging Online Social Networks for People with Disabilities in Emergency Communications and Recovery," published in the International Journal of Emergency Management (2010, 7, 59-74). His article was highlighted in a recent press release distributed by the publisher, Interscience Media.

Violence Against Women in Guatemala: Global Connections and Action in the U.S.
1-4 p.m.

This workshop will feature Norma Cruz of The Survivors Foundation in Guatemala City. Cruz won a 2009 Woman of Courage Award from the U.S. State Department in recognition of her leadership while struggling for social justice and human rights. Haiti Relief — Collaboration with Catholic Charities of Central Florida


Update on the situation: At present US citizens and Haitian-nationals returning from Haiti are being processed at Sanford airport. Many are arriving barefoot, cold and without adequate clothing. They are being put up in hotels until they can be reunited with family members from across the US. The next group to arrive will be Haitian citizens with refugee status in the US. There are more than 4000 expected to arrive in Central Florida over the next several weeks. Catholic Charities will be working to help these families resettle in the US.

Immediate Resource Needs: Coats, blankets, diapers, diapee wipes, etc., donations to Catholic Charities. Drop off location:Catholic Charities of Central Florida, 1819 N Semoran Blvd., Orlando, FL 32807

Immediate, Urgent Need for Creole Speakers:
Please contact Glenda Agosto, MSW, Integration Assistance Services Coordinator, at 407-658-1818 ext 2061 if you are able to provide any assistance with language translation and interpretation.

Longer term resettlement of refugees: Volunteers will be needed to help settle and promote self-sufficiency of incoming refugees. Please click here for volunteer needs.

Haiti Relief

January 15, 2010
Prayers and thoughts from the students, alumni, staff and faculty of the School of Social Work go out to the people of Haiti in their time of great need. In cooperation with the College of Health and Public Affairs and the Salvation Army, the school will be collecting blankets, shoes, and clothing for all ages and sizes. Boxes will be located in HPA I and II. If you need asistance in bringing your donation to the colelction site, please contact our main office 407-823-2114 for assistance.

Assistant Professor Julia Buckey's paper entitled, "Life-sustaining treatment decisions of health care surrogates and proxies: A social work response," co-authored with Dr. Neil Abell, has been accepted for presentation at the Changing Health 2010, 6th International Conference on Social Work in Health and Mental Health, in Dublin, Ireland, in June.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Ana Leon and B.S.W. Coordinator and Instructor Robin Kohn for their selection as 2008-2010 honorees in the "Women Making History: The Faculty Women Prominence Project." The project honors UCF faculty and administrators who have had significant national and/or international recognition. Leon and Kohn will be fetted at a March 24, 2010, luncheon sponsored by the project.

Michael Rothenberg, program coordinator for the Title IV-E Child Welfare Education Program, has been invited join a panel on sex addiction at Sex Week at Yale (SWAY), a renowned interdisciplinary sex education program that explores issues of love, sex, intimacy and relationships. Relationship experts, authors, professors and television personalities will participate in the weeklong event, held Feb. 7-14, 2010, at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
