The School of Social Work and the Central Florida Chapter of the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups (AASWG) presents special guest Steven Kraft, President of AASWG, Inc. Steven Kraft's presentation "Facilitating Substance Abuse Groups" begins at 4:30 and is immediately followed by the AASWG meeting. www.aaswg.org

The School of Social Work will hold its 4th annual alumni continuing education event on March 5, 2010. The school is partnering with the Orlando Veteran's Affairs Center and the Florida National Association of Social Workers (FL-NASW) to prepare this year's conference which will focus on veterans and the community.

 Recent Events

FL-NASW held its annual conference in June, 2009. Ms. Robin Kohn, social work instructor and BSW coordinator served as Conference Committee Chair of this year’s event. Full-time faculty, Drs. Eileen Abel, Shawn Lawrence, Ana Leon, Olga Molina and part-time faculty member Dr. Michael Campbell presented in their areas of expertise.

 Congratulations

The school would like to recognize and congratulate Ms. Ada Heller, Office Manager, for her 15 years of service to the university.

Maija Pietlä, a MSW student and Christina Browning, a BSW student were selected to receive scholarships through the generosity of Judy Thames and the Winter Park Health Foundation. Both students’ studies and interests are focused in gerontological social work.  Ms. Pietlä will complete her advanced clinical placement with Community Care for the Elderly and the Healthy Ideas project during the 2009-2010 academic year. Ms. Browning will complete a research project on end-of-life care during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Drs. Denise Gammonley, Ana Leon, and Julie Steen selected as 2009-2010 COPHA Research Fellows. Winners of competitive program receive a stipend and ongoing professional development experience.

Ms. Robin Kohn has been reappointed as a member of the Council on Disability and Persons with Disabilities for a three-year term, beginning this fall. The council is part of the overall Council on Social Work Education.



 Faculty News

The School of Social Work is excited to welcome two new faculty members. Dr. Maralee Walsh joins the faculty as a full-time Instructor, teaching in and coordinating the Daytona Regional Campus MSW Program. We also welcome Shelley Hall, MSW as the new Assistant Coordinator for Field Education.

Research and Scholarship

The School of Social Work faculty actively engages in individual and collaborative research resulting in high quality publications and presentations. There is considerable breadth to the scope of work, encompassing women, youth, immigrants, health, mental health, aging, disability and sexuality.

Dr. Eileen Abel, Associate Professor, presented at the annual FL-NASW conference. Her presentation entitled Domestic Violence and Child Welfare assisted participants in understanding the impact of domestic violence on the welfare of children.

Dr. John Bricout, Associate Professor and Assistant Director of Research, was selected to present at the Wireless Emergency Communications State of Technology Conference. This event will be held September 21-23, 2009 on the Georgia Tech campus. The title of his presentation is Planning, Connections and Engaging the Community:  Virtual Collaborations & Social Networks.

Dr. Bricout will also present, along with Dr. Paul Baker of the Georgia Institute of Technology, at the Thirty-first Annual Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management Research Conference in Washington, D.C., November 5-7, 2009. The title of their presentation is Empirically driven policy tools for inclusive E-governance.

Dr. Shawn Lawrence, Assistant Professor, recently participated in a press conference on truancy prevention in Orange County. The press conference was held to discuss the results of an evaluation of the Early Truancy Intervention Program, which was evaluated by the researchers at the request of the Office of the State Attorney.

Dr. Lawrence also presented at the annual FL-NASW conference. Her presentation entitled, Medications and Social Work Practice, focused on the need for social workers’ understanding of psychotropic medications and provided participants with a biopsychosocial and cultural understanding and current knowledge base of psychotropic medications used in the health care environment and how medications impact
the helping relationship.

Dr. Ana Leon, Associate Professor, presented over the summer at the Fourth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, held in Greece. Dr. Leon’s presentation entitled, Hispanic/Latino Cultural Values in the United States and their Impact on the Separation-Individuation Process in Latino Toddlers, encouraged participants to identify the various ways that culture affects the development of the separation-individuation process in Hispanic/Latino toddlers.

Dr. Leon also presented at the annual FL-NASW conference. Her presentation entitled, Reflective Supervision in Infant Mental Health: On the Journey with Professionals That Provide Services to Children 0-5 Years and Their Families, focused on helping participants to identify how reflective supervision can provide a trusting, and supportive environment necessary for social workers providing services to children ages 0-5 and their families.

Dr. Olga Molina, Assistant Professor, presented at the annual FL-NASW conference. Her presentation entitled, Abused Latina Immigrants’ Experiences with Domestic Violence Support Groups, discussed the experiences of  immigrant Latinas that participated in one-year domestic violence groups in Palm Beach County.

Dr. Michael Campbell, a part-time faculty member, presented at the annual FL-NASW conference. His presentation was entitled The Epidemic of Pediatric Obesity: Empowering Families to Live Healthier.

 Social Work Student News

Research and Community Involvement
 

Dr. Eileen Abel's summer Macro Interventions course partnered with Seniors First on a class service learning project that provided the clients of the agency with Hurricane Kits. The kits included food, blankets, weather radios, and other valuable resources that will assist these elder clients during hurricane season.

 

BSW Program & Student News

The BSW Student Association kicked off an active fall schedule with their first meetings, held on September 3rd and 17th. Please look for flyers around the Health and Public Affairs (HPA) building for dates and times of upcoming meetings. BSW Student Association meetings in September and October will focus on gathering gift donations for the Angel Tree Project. All BSW students are welcome and are encouraged to participate in the semester’s activities.

The 2009-2010 BSW Student Association officers are: Chair - Sally Ten Eyck, Treasurer - Mirella Del Pino, Secretary - Tiffany Gabriel, Activities - Annie Hershberger, Events Coordinator - Lindsey Masterson, Communication - Lori Reese

MSW Program & Student News

The MSW Student Association will hold its next meeting October 1 @ 6:00. Dues for membership are $15, and renewals are $7. All MSW students are encouraged to attend. Phi Alpha honors society will meet on September 24 @ 5:30. MSW students will be informed of the meeting location via email.

The 2009-2010 MSW Student Association officers are: President – Sarah Webb, Stephanie Cohen – Vice President, Secretary – Megan Smart, Treasurer- Deborah Alfonso.


PAF Program & Student News 

Rebekah Hazlett, a Ph.D. candidate in the PAF Doctoral program, recently collaborated with Dr. John Bricout and the NanoScience Technology Center to conduct a content analysis of a focus group involving assistive technology and the Traumatic Spinal Cord Injured population. The results of this qualitative analysis were presented to the Orlando Health Rehabilitation Institute on September 11, 2009.

Mike Mason, a first year Ph.D. student in the PAF Doctoral program is a previous graduate of the School of Social Work. After graduating with his MSW he served as the Director of Social Work at Meals on Wheels, Etc. in Seminole County. Mr. Mason also earned a Masters of Nonprofit Management. He joins the Ph.D. program to continue his studies in interdisciplinary social issues.

Terrance Ruth, a first year Ph.D. student in the PAF Doctoral program received his Masters in Educational Leadership from Nova University. Mr. Ruth hopes to focus his doctoral studies on family structures within urban communities; he is specifically interested in factors related to absentee fathers and dominate mother figures in urban culture.

 School of Social Work Community Advisory Council

The School of Social Work Community Advisory Council continues to meet regularly. The most recent meeting was held on August 19th and the next meeting is scheduled for November 18th. To learn more about our community advisory council - click here

 Alumni Chapter News

The UCF Social Work Alumni Chapter is busy planning events for the 2009-10 academic year.  The 2nd annual CEU workshop to be held on Friday, February 5, 2010 at the FAIRWINDS Alumni Center on the main Orlando campus.

Alum Highlight - Tara (Ream) Moser, UCF MSW 2004

Tara (Ream) Moser has been busy since graduating in 2004 with her MSW from UCF. Relocating in 2005 to her hometown of Cape Coral, Florida, Ms. Moser opened a successful private practice, Delta Family Connections www.deltafamilycounseling.com. In her private practice Ms. Moser utilizes play therapy and animal assisted therapy. She was also a cofounder of Community Awareness in Recognizing and Educating on Suicide (CARES, leecountycares.org), a non-profit agency focused on suicide prevention. Ms. Moser has also been extremely active in both local and national professional organizations and presented several workshops to fellow mental health professionals as well as parents and community members.

Ms. Moser was recently recognized by both the professional social work and play therapy communities for her numerous contributions.  The SW Unit of NASW-FL named Ms. Moser their Social Worker of the Year, and the Florida Association for Play Therapy selected her for the Viola Brody Award. Congratulations on a job well done!
