The School of Social Work is excited to welcome two new faculty members. Dr. Maralee Walsh joins the faculty as a full-time Instructor, teaching in and coordinating the Daytona Regional Campus MSW Program. We also welcome Shelley Hall, MSW as the new Assistant Coordinator for Field Education.
Research and Scholarship
The School of Social Work faculty actively engages in individual and collaborative research resulting in high quality publications and presentations. There is considerable breadth to the scope of work, encompassing women, youth, immigrants, health, mental health, aging, disability and sexuality.
Dr. Eileen Abel, Associate Professor, presented at the annual FL-NASW conference. Her presentation entitled Domestic Violence and Child Welfare assisted participants in understanding the impact of domestic violence on the welfare of children.
Dr. John Bricout, Associate Professor and Assistant Director of Research, was selected to present at the Wireless Emergency Communications State of Technology Conference. This event will be held September 21-23, 2009 on the Georgia Tech campus. The title of his presentation is Planning, Connections and Engaging the Community: Virtual Collaborations & Social Networks.
Dr. Bricout will also present, along with Dr. Paul Baker of
the Georgia Institute of Technology, at the Thirty-first Annual Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management Research Conference in Washington, D.C., November 5-7, 2009. The title of their presentation is Empirically driven policy tools for inclusive E-governance.
Dr. Shawn Lawrence, Assistant Professor, recently participated in a press conference on truancy prevention in Orange County. The press conference was held to discuss the results of an evaluation of the Early Truancy Intervention Program, which was evaluated by the researchers at the request of the Office of the State Attorney.
Dr. Lawrence also presented at the annual FL-NASW conference. Her presentation entitled, Medications and Social Work Practice, focused on the need for social workers’ understanding of psychotropic medications and provided participants with a biopsychosocial and cultural understanding and current knowledge base of psychotropic medications used in the health care environment and how medications impact
the helping relationship.
Dr. Ana Leon, Associate Professor, presented over the summer at the Fourth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, held in Greece. Dr. Leon’s presentation entitled, Hispanic/Latino Cultural Values in the United States and their Impact on the Separation-Individuation Process in Latino Toddlers, encouraged participants to identify the various ways that culture affects the development of the separation-individuation process in Hispanic/Latino toddlers.
Dr. Leon also presented at the annual FL-NASW conference. Her presentation entitled, Reflective Supervision in Infant Mental Health: On the Journey with Professionals That Provide Services to Children 0-5 Years and Their Families, focused on helping participants to identify how reflective supervision can provide a trusting, and supportive environment necessary for social workers providing services to children ages 0-5 and their families.
Dr. Olga Molina, Assistant Professor, presented at the annual FL-NASW conference. Her presentation entitled, Abused Latina Immigrants’ Experiences with Domestic Violence Support Groups, discussed the experiences of immigrant Latinas that participated in one-year domestic violence groups in Palm Beach County.
