Physical Therapy Hosts National Leadership Course
The Program in Physical Therapy recently hosted a weekend course, “Lead Wherever You Are: Becoming a Personal Leader,” for the American Physical Therapy Association’s Institute for Leadership in Physical Therapy.  The course is the first in a series of courses offered by the institute to develop leadership skills and professionalism in physical therapy.

Hosting the course provides the host institution with an opportunity to highlight its program to physical therapists from across the country, said Judi Schack-Dugre, instructor of physical therapy at UCF. Among the 30 attendees at this latest course offering, held July 22-24, was Sheila Nicholson, president of the Florida Physical Therapy Association. She and other leaders at the course asked to tour UCF’s physical therapy facilities and to meet some UCF physical therapy students. “I introduced them to several students who were practicing and studying in our skills lab and they extended the invitation to our students to attend the course,” said Patrick Pabian, interim director of UCF’s physical therapy program.

Schack-Dugre said the group was very impressed with UCF’s facilities. “Overall, it was very successful,” she added. “So much so they would like to come back in October of 2012.”

HP Highlights

  • William J. Hanney

Congratulations to William Hanney, D.P.T., ATC, LAT, instructor of physical therapy, for receiving the Young Investigator Research Grant from the Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association! The $8,100 grant will support his research on the “Development of a Clinical Prediction Rule to Identify Patients with Neck Pain Likely to Benefit from Education and Exercise.” Neck pain is common and accounts for a large portion of an orthopedic physical therapist’s case load. Decisions on how to treat these patients can be difficult. A clinical-prediction rule will provide a guiding strategy for identifying patients with neck pain who are likely to benefit from clinical exercises.

They can accomplish this by identifying opportunities, labeling them and developing strategies surrounding them to maximize competitiveness. Her presentation also covered defining competition in a given business model and included discussions on value in health care and how internal culture and policies and procedures affect competitive positioning within a given market. Schack-Dugre has an M.B.A. and years of experience as a director of rehabilitation in an acute-care hospital system and an owner of a private physical therapy practice.
