ORLANDO, July 22, 2008 — Undergraduate social work students recently put together hurricane survival kits for 30 of the most needy clients of Seniors First, a nonprofit organization. This Thursday, a group of the students will deliver the kits to the elderly clients' homes, which are located throughout Orange County.
The students spent weeks soliciting and gathering batteries, flashlights, blankets, first-aid kits, nonperishable food and boxes from local organizations, including UCF and Valencia Community College. Last Thursday they met to box and bag the materials as individual kits.
The students conceived of
the project as part of the course, "Macro-level Roles and Interventions in Social Work," taught this summer by Associate Professor Eileen Abel. After implementing the project, they will evaluate their efforts, focusing on aspects such as group dynamics, leadership styles, decision-making and conflict management.
"I am just delighted with the efforts of this student group," Abel said. "They really undertook a useful and helpful project."
